"Musically, the song's somewhere between early Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel, a wistful folk tune colored by harmonica (or is that accordion?), a confident melody and lyrics about longing for somebody far away. Whether that chasm is geographical or emotional in nature isn't stated, but either way this is a fine little ditty that reminds us, like Bono did (with slightly higher stakes) back in 1983, that a new year isn't always cause for renewed optimism."

lyrics
new year’s day, two thousand and four.
you wanted less, but i wanted more.
so another year’s gone and past.
where does time go? are ya havin’, havin’ a blast?
are ya havin’ a blast?
i’m not scared... well, maybe afraid.
decisions, oh they cannot be made.
but no goin’ solo don’t go it alone.
take it from me... i still live at home.
i still live at home.
oh but this year won’t be the same.
i’m makin’ a promise. i’m makin’ a name for myself.
and i am starting off right.
and i really wanna see you tonight.
wanna see you tonight.
new year’s day and i’m feeling sad.
the highs and the lows will drive a man mad.
but good things come to those who wait???
well i’ve waited and waited, but still, still i wait...
oh but this year won’t be the same.
i’m makin’ a promise. i’m makin’ a name for myself.
and i am starting off right.
and i really wanna see you tonight.
but this year i’m certain to make it or break.
i’m not gonna sit, no i’m not gonna waste.
this year i’m certain to make it or break.
i’m not gonna sit, no i’m not gonna waste, no, no...
oh cause this year won’t be the same.
i’m makin’ a promise. im makin‘ a name for myself.
and i am starting off right.
and i really wanna see you...
tonight, oh it won’t be the same.
i’m makin’ a promise. i’m makin’ a name for myself
and i am starting off right.
and i really wanna see you tonight.
wanna see you tonight.

late '03/early '04 origins. originally began as a "sea shanty" with completely different lyrics, inspired by the story of a buried treasure. i literally wrote the majority of the current lyrics on jan. 1, 2004 during one of those "fork in the road" moments of life. kind of depressing, yet inspiring at the same time. i recorded guitar/vox together in one take, and there is actually a much quieter 2nd take layered on top. maryam and i took turns playing parts on her pump organ (sounds kinky) and the final organ track is a combination of both of us. lead vox & acoustic guitar, bass, nyck vox recorded nov. '05, harmonica jan. '06 in winterhaven basement. organ recorded in maryam's apt. aug. '06. drums recorded mar. '07 at highland. various percussion recorded in nov. '05, jan. '06, & apr. '07.
